Over the last ten years I have helped many start-up businesses, along with more established businesses looking for growth. September/October is always a busy period for business start-ups and I’ve found that time off with the family creates the thinking time needed to make decisions about launching a new venture.
With that in mind, I thought it would be a good time to recommend a holiday read to make sure you time on the sun lounger is productive as well as enjoyable and relaxing. One of the best business books I’ve read for business start-ups and those looking to grow their business is;
First written nearly 30 years ago by Michael Gerber and updated in 1995, this book is as relevant now as it was then. Gerber starts by telling us that he believes that there is a myth going round that all business owners are entrepreneurs. Gerber instead believes that all business owners had an entrepreneurial “moment” when they decided to set up in business, but for many this is as far as the entrepreneurial spirit goes.
The book uses the fictional example of Sarah, and her business ‘All About Pies’ which really helps cement the issues discussed throughout the book.
I’ve recommended this book to many clients and the feedback from those that have taken the time to read it has been great. Many tell me they see themselves very much going through the same problems Sarah goes through.
The book has three main sections
In this section the book looks at why most businesses are started by “technicians” that are skilled in what they do but never really know how to run a business.
This section talks about how to treat your business as if you were going to franchise it, and effectively create a prototype business.
The business development is split into seven distinct steps and a foundation of three key activities.
I personally prefer the audiobook, so that I can listen to it as I’m driving as well as resting, plus the sun won’t get in your eyes if you are reading it on your sun lounger by the pool.
